Since 2012, the FDA has approved TRUVADA (pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP) for individuals with a high risk of HIV infection. This pill works with other medicines to prevent HIV. According to the CDC, PrEP is highly effective and reduces the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99%. However, for people who inject drugs, the effectiveness is much lower at 74%. The agency also reminds the public one must take the pill consistently to ensure its full efficacy.
